Training in a practical youth suicide intervention for Texas primary care clinicians and teams
CPAN offers free, evidence-based SAFETY-A training to help pediatric clinicians identify and assess suicide risk, develop effective safety plans with patients and their families, and avoid unnecessary ER visits.
SAFETY-A is a flexible, efficient, and effective intervention for youth with suicidal thoughts and behaviors designed to fit your pace, practice, and limited time with patients.
The SAFETY-A intervention—developed by researchers at the UCLA ASAP Center and offered to CPAN by the Baylor College of Medicine HRI—focuses on reducing risk, supporting continuity of care, restricting access to lethal means, and strengthening protective factors.
Why SAFETY-A?
Suicide is the second leading cause of death among youth ages 10–24 in the United States, and rates have been rising for decades. Early identification and intervention can save lives.
Primary care clinicians regularly see patients with suicidal thoughts or actions, or self-harm, but they don’t always feel prepared or trained to assess risk or plan next steps.

SAFETY-A Training Levels
Choose the SAFETY-A training that fits your needs. Clinicians can attend one or more training levels; there are no prerequisites for any level. The Level 3 training has all Level 2 content built into it. Below the chart are descriptions of each level.

Overview of the SAFETY-A approach and introduction to suicide risk assessment and safety planning to help clinicians determine if SAFETY-A training might benefit their practice.
Core SAFETY-A Master Training to build foundational skills for suicide risk assessment and safety planning. Includes case videos and role-playing exercises to practice using SAFETY-A.
Includes the 3-hour Master Training, three consultation sessions, and a 1.5-hour booster training to support full mastery and competency in SAFETY-A. The small-group consultation sessions with SAFETY-A trainers and peers allow clinicians to discuss real clinical cases and strengthen implementation.
Learn about universal suicide screening in pediatric settings using the Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS) screening tool, including identifying a patient’s current risk level and appropriate triage and documenting risk assessments.
Who Should Participate?
SAFETY-A training and Youth Suicide Risk Assessment Training are available for health care clinicians working in primary care settings in Texas.
Clinical teams from primary care clinics and pediatric practices are encouraged to participate in SAFETY-A training together. This can strengthen shared workflows and make it easier to implement the intervention in your setting.
SAFETY-A training is coordinated and offered by CPAN by the Baylor College of Medicine HRI.
