Texas Child Mental Health Care Consortium Statement on the Uvalde, Texas Elementary School Shooting
Austin, Texas — The Texas Child Mental Health Care Consortium sends its deepest sympathies to those affected by the mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas this week. No child, no parent, no community should have to experience what happened on May 24th at Robb Elementary.
The impact of the tragedy on the mental health of the survivors, their families, their community, and all Texas children will be felt for many weeks or even years to come. Many Texans are trying to cope and may not know where to start. We encourage those who need immediate help to call 1-800-273-8255. To find help for you or your family, visit www.MentalHealthTx.org.
As our hearts go out to Uvalde, we are joining our partners across the state and local communities to fulfill the Consortium’s mission to ALL Texas children. We are working on a coordinated response, led by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) and in collaboration with Local Mental Health Authorities and the Consortium’s vast psychiatric networks to provide support in the best way possible to the children of Texas and their families as they cope with this trauma.
We are committed to do that now and in the future. In the immediate aftermath of this event, we will provide:
- support to families and individuals involved and community responders who are serving tirelessly to help them;
- referrals to appropriate resources; and
- telehealth support for primary care physicians, schools, students and families through our Child Psychiatry Access Network (CPAN) and the Texas Child Health Access Through Telemedicine initiative (TCHATT).
During this difficult time, you are not alone. The Texas Child Mental Health Care Consortium stands with the people of Uvalde, and all Texans, affected by this tragedy.
